Virtual Learning Curriculum & Materials: The Journey
It is a sunny, pleasant day when the doorbell rings in the Smith household. Johnny answers the door and is greeted by a UPS delivery man who has placed several large cardboard boxes on the family’s front porch. It looks like Christmas, with gifts for everyone. But wait- it’s only August. Did they win the lotto? Was it a windfall from the estate of a family member? Or perhaps a mistake? What is this all about? The Smith Family eagerly moves the boxes in the living room, and begins to tear into the gifts. Those gifts are curriculum from K¹², where Johnny is enrolled as a full-time, fifth grade student at COVA. Opening the boxes, Johnny’s eyes are wide and bright with excitement. It is his school, in his own learning environment that he will do at his pace. Now, he has the tools he needs to start school. If only the first day was here… READ MORE

Virtually Schooling Hospital Homebound Students
For over five years, I have worked in a variety of capacities with K¹². I’ve had the opportunity to work with students and teachers in virtual academies and charter schools from around the country and the world. As we embark on another school year, I am seeing yet another group of students benefitting from this program. I am now working with students in Florida who are designated “hospital homebound” (HH). There are myriad reasons why a student may have this designation: severe food allergies, cancer treatments, anxiety disorders, debilitating migraines, etc. Whatever the reason for having this designation, the students are not able to attend the local brick and mortar schools. The time in the HH program may be short-term or long-term, depending on the reason for the designation. READ MORE

No Such Thing as a Typical Online Education Family
Most of us parents are now getting used to our back to school routines– and our kids — well, I am sure some of them are following the routine better than others! At my house, it splits down the middle – one loves being back in school and one – still fighting it tooth and nail. And am I getting used to the new routine, you ask? There are still not enough hours in the day to get it all done. I know I am not the only who has a pit in their stomach that can only be caused by the “how are we going to get this all done” feeling because I have come across a few parenting blogs talking about ways to handle it all, and of course I am seeing lots of questions and comments about it from other parents in the Parents’ Lounge. And even though it’s not the best feeling and don’t get mad at me when I say this — knowing that there are other parents out there feeling this same way actually makes me feel a little bit better. It tells me that I am a normal. Although if you ask my family, normal is not the word they would use– but let’s not dwell on that. READ MORE

Dads and Virtual Learning: How Coffee & Education Relate

Technically, there is an art to making a great cup of coffee.
By that I mean there is much more to it than just simply “putting the coffee on to brew.” In my office, I have a magnet from Starbucks that describes The Four Fundamentals: How to make a great cup of coffee. And, what is funny is that in a lot of ways, it also relates to making education great. How? Join me on the adventure of the next few paragraphs and let’s explore this concept together. At the end of today’s story, hopefully, we will have found the ingredients to make our educational journey great (or at least better). If not, at least we will have the knowledge to make a great cup of coffee.
According to Starbucks, the Four Fundamentals of making a great cup of coffee are… READ MORE
